Allie Michel

Major: Journalism — Public Relations, Minor in Sports Marketing and Management

Years at IU: 2012 – 2016

What she did at IU: I interned for Indiana University Athletics in the media relations department for a year working with various sports ranging from Swimming to Men’s Soccer. As a junior, I was hired as a part-time assistant within the department for two years, serving as the assistant sports information director for the rowing team and the assistant to the men’s basketball SIDs. I also worked closely with the Director of Creative Strategy for the Men’s Basketball team throughout my senior year. Outside of my sports media involvement, I was on the marketing committee for Indiana University Dance Marathon and a sister of Kappa Delta sorority.

What she does now: As Public Relations Manager for Relevent Sports, I manage media outreach, publicity and promotion for key company properties including the International Champions Cup (ICC), the ICC Women’s Tournament, the ICC Futures Tournament and a fan experience exhibit called “House of Soccer.”

What advice she has for sports media students: My two pieces of advice for current students is to: 1) get experience in your field on campus and 2) network as much as possible. One of the biggest things organizations and teams look for on a resume is that you were invested in sports media on your campus as a student. IU has so many different opportunities for you to get involved and to gain experiences to add to your resume. Take advantage of them! When it comes to networking, sending emails to alumni or people across the industry to set up informational interviews is the best way to make connections. Maintaining relationships is vital to the sports industry — and I am always happy to help a fellow Hoosier!
