Major: Sports Communication – Broadcast
Years at IU: 2011-15
What you did at IU: I worked for BTN Student U, WIUX Radio (99.1 FM), and IUSportCom throughout my four years in Bloomington, broadcasting and covering everything from men’s basketball games to track and field. In my junior year, as the play-by-play broadcaster, I was part of the first fully student-produced men’s basketball game show to air live on the Big Ten Network. During my final two years on campus, I was the lead announcer for the women’s softball team.
What you do now: Media relations coordinator with the Chicago Blackhawks
What advice you have for sports media students: Don’t take any opportunity or relationship for granted. You never truly know who you meet or what event you cover will provide the break you are searching for. Even if it’s just a way to get your foot inside the door — take advantage of it. If you’re passionate about pursuing a job in sports, understand that there are personal sacrifices that will need to be made in order to chase your dream. Lastly, don’t be afraid to fail a few times or hear the word “no.” It’s happened to everyone, no matter how accomplished they are.
