Indiana University’s student sports media outlets provide an array of expert coverage of the 2018 Men’s and Women’s Little 500 races. Through written, radio, and video coverage, IU student sports media provides you with the key stories and trends relating to both races.

The Indiana University Student Foundation, Indiana University Media School and IU Radio and Television Services are once again joining forces to provide a live video broadcast of both races. This cooperative venture is in its third season, and has provided invaluable hands-on experiences producing a video broadcast of a major sporting event to a large number of Indiana University students.
Women’s Race – Video
On Friday, April 20th, the video broadcast of the 31st running of the Women’s Little 500 will start at 4:00 PM ET.
Broadcasting the race will be senior media school student David Sugarman, who also provided play-by-play on last year’s women’s race. Sugarman is a four-year sports media student, with prior broadcasting experience via the Big Ten Student U program, WIUX student radio, and IUSTV.
Joining David in the booth will be Little 500 veteran rider Caitlin Van Kooten. A 2011 graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences, Van Kooten was a two-time women’s champion with the Teter racing team. Van Kooten also provided color commentary on last year’s race broadcast. She is currently an MBA Candidate at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Field reporter for the 2018 women’s little 500 will be senior media school student Courtney Robb. While it is her first Little 500 broadcast, Courtney is no stranger to sports broadcasting at IU, having gained extensive experience as a reporter with the Hoosier Sports Report, Big Ten Student U, and WIUX.
The video broadcast is being directed by senior Cameron Spahr, with junior Alivia Pavich serving as associate director. NSJC Director Galen Clavio is serving as producer for the broadcast. Technical supervision of the broadcast is provided by Eric Garabrant.
The video broadcast will be available on the university’s broadcast page, located at broadcast.iu.edu, and also available on the IU Student Foundation Facebook page.
Women’s Race – Audio
WIUX Student Radio will be providing its own live broadcast of the women’s Little 500. WIUX has covered the race for several decades. On the broadcast are sophomores Jack Grossman and Casey Roehl, both sports media students. Junior Luke Hallett will be serving as engineer. You can catch the broadcast on WIUX’s live stream.
Men’s Race – Video
On Saturday, April 21st, the video broadcast of the 68th running of the Men’s Little 500 will start at 4:00 PM ET.
Broadcasting the race will be junior Media School student Josh Eastern, who is back for his second go-around on play-by-play after also having called last year’s race. Josh is currently a co-editor of The Hoosier Network, and has extensive play-by-play experience through the Cape Cod League and WIUX.
Joining Josh in the booth is former Little 500 rider Jordan Bailey. Jordan served for five years as Little 500 race director, and currently works at Emory University in an assistant athletic director role. Jordan is back for his second year in a row as color commentator on the broadcast.
Returning to his role as field reporter this year is junior Eddie Cotton. A three-year sports media veteran, Eddie is a Kelley School of Business student, but has served in numerous broadcast and leadership roles during his time at Indiana, including co-founder and editor of The Hoosier Network, co-sports director at WIUX, and lead men’s soccer broadcaster for Indiana’s Big Ten Student U program.

WIUX Student Radio will be providing its own live broadcast of the men’s Little 500. WIUX has a long and rich history of broadcasting the Little 500, with coverage extending back into the 1960s. On the broadcast are senior Mike McMahon, junior Luke Hallett, and freshman Austin Render, with sophomore Casey Roehl serving as engineer. You can catch the broadcast on WIUX’s live stream.
